Massage Therapy FAQs

What types of massage do you offer at ZenAkari in South Lake Tahoe?

At ZenAkari, every massage is customized to your body and your wellness goals. We offer therapeutic massage, deep tissue, Swedish, sports massage, prenatal massage, hot stone, bamboo massage, cupping therapy, manual lymphatic drainage, craniosacral therapy and reflexology. Whether you're seeking pain relief, stress reduction, athletic recovery, or relaxation, we'll help you choose the treatment that's right for you.

Which massage is best for chronic pain?

The best massage for chronic pain isn't always deep tissue. Chronic pain can be caused by muscle tension, restricted fascia, stress, poor posture, old injuries, or nervous system imbalance. Your therapist will customize your session using the techniques that best support your body, helping reduce pain while improving movement and recovery.

How often should I get a massage?

It depends on your goals. For general wellness, many people benefit from a massage every 4–6 weeks. If you're recovering from an injury, managing chronic pain, training for an event, or under high stress, weekly or bi-weekly sessions may provide the best results. Your therapist can recommend a schedule that's right for you.

Massage isn't just a luxury—it's an investment in your health. Regular bodywork can help reduce stress, improve circulation, support healthy movement, decrease muscle tension, and help you stay active so you can continue enjoying everything South Lake Tahoe has to offer.

Does massage help reduce stress and anxiety?

Yes. Massage helps calm the nervous system, reduce muscle tension, improve circulation, and encourage relaxation. Many clients notice improved sleep, lower stress levels, and a greater sense of well-being after regular massage therapy.

Can massage help headaches and migraines?

Massage may help reduce the frequency and intensity of tension headaches and some migraines by relieving tight muscles in the neck, shoulders, and jaw while promoting relaxation and improved circulation.

Should I be sore after a massage?

Some mild soreness is normal after deeper therapeutic work, similar to how you might feel after exercise. Most soreness resolves within 24–48 hours. Drinking water, gentle movement, and stretching can help your body recover.

What should I wear to my massage appointment?

Wear comfortable clothing. You'll be given privacy to undress to your comfort level and will always be professionally draped throughout your session. If you're receiving a specific treatment, we'll let you know if any special preparation is needed.

Can I request extra focus on one area?

Absolutely. Every massage is customized to your needs. If you'd like extra attention or all the attention on your neck, shoulders, back, hips, or another area, simply let your therapist know before your session begins.

Is massage covered by insurance?

Our massage services are not billed directly to insurance. However, if your plan offers reimbursement for massage therapy, we're happy to provide a receipt for you to submit to your insurance provider. Clients also pay with FHA cards frequently.

Can I book a couples massage?

We can often accommodate two massages at the same time, just not in the same room. Contact us to check availability and we'll help you plan a relaxing experience together.

Where is the best place to get a massage in South Lake Tahoe?

We're a little biased, so we'd love to say ZenAkari!

In all seriousness, the "best" massage is the one that's tailored to your body, your goals, and your experience. Whether you're recovering after a day on the slopes, hiking the Tahoe trails, dealing with chronic aches, or simply looking to relax, finding a therapist who listens and customizes your treatment makes all the difference.

At ZenAkari, we don't believe in cookie-cutter massages. Every session is personalized using the techniques, pressure, and recovery therapies that best support your body. Our goal isn't just for you to enjoy your massage—it's for you to leave feeling better than when you walked in.

If you're looking for a massage in South Lake Tahoe, we'd be honored to help you discover why so many locals and visitors choose ZenAkari for massage, recovery, and wellness.

Side note: stress free parking and a cozy coffee shop next store helps and we have both of those. We also have the most incredible therapists guided by an owner that has been a bodywork therapist for over 33 years and has won best massage therapist multiple times.

Recovery & Longevity

What is recovery therapy?

Recovery therapy includes treatments designed to help your body heal, reduce inflammation, improve circulation, decrease muscle soreness, and support overall wellness. At ZenAkari, recovery services include massage, red light therapy, cryotherapy, compression therapy, NanoVi, BrainTap, PEMF magnet therapy, and frequency sound therapy.

Which recovery treatment is best after skiing or hiking in Lake Tahoe?

It depends on how your body feels. Many guests combine massage, cupping therapy, localized cryotherapy, red light therapy and/or compression boots to reduce soreness, improve circulation, and recover faster after enjoying South Lake Tahoe's outdoor activities.

How can I speed up muscle recovery?

Hydration, quality sleep, proper nutrition, stretching, and regular recovery treatments all play an important role. Massage, compression therapy, red light therapy, and cryotherapy can also help reduce soreness and support faster recovery.

What recovery treatments help reduce inflammation?

Massage, localized cryotherapy, red light therapy, lymphatic drainage, PEMF, and compression therapy are all designed to support circulation, reduce inflammation, and encourage the body's natural healing process.

What is the difference between massage and recovery therapies?

Massage focuses on muscles, fascia, and soft tissues through hands-on treatment. Recovery therapies use advanced wellness technologies that complement massage by supporting circulation, reducing inflammation, improving recovery, and promoting relaxation.
